1 Day trip
Welcome to Constanta, one of the most important harbours at the Black Sea and a city more than 2000 years old! Built by the Greeks - the legend of its foundation is tied to Jason seeking the golden fleece and Medeea murdering their sons - it became the exile home of the Roman poet Ovidius. Later, it flourished under the Ottoman rule. Constanta, as Dobruja, the province where it lies, is a multicultural place, where Tatars, Turks, Armenians, Jews and Romanians lived in peace for years.
The visit will start in the Constanta Peninsula, where’s the historical city center. We will meet just outside the commercial harbour and start a 2 hour walking tour of the historical center. We will pass by the Casino, a wonderful 19th century Art Nouveau structure, the Genovese lighthouse; we will walk along the seafront (a popular walking site) before entering the maze that is the historical center. We will stop by the Old Synagogue, small mosques, and impressive buildings from the beginning of the 20th century and hear their stories: some of them are tight to wealthy men, some were casinos, some brothels, and some have sad love stories.
We will visit the Grand Mosque of Constanta (a beautiful building which combines Neo-Romanian elements with Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Egyptian ones) and climb the 47 meters minaret, where we will have a lovely view of the seashore, the ports, the old city.
Another stop will be at the Roman Mosaic - a structure sheltering a 800 square meters mosaic floor from the 4th century AD.
After, we will visit the Archeological Museum and find more about the city’s glorious past through the glass artifacts, the weapons, and the graves discovered.
Lunch will be at a seafood restaurant.
After lunch we will go visit the ruins of the ancient city of Histria. Once prosperous, the city fell after the lagoon was gradually filled with sand, thus making sea trading more and more difficult for ships.
Afterwards, we will stop by a local famous vineyard, Murfatlar. Dobruja is a well known wine region, vineyards being cultivated here since the first century BC. We will visit their Wine Museum and we will taste 5 of their best wines.
We will return to Constanta in the evening, where our day trip will end.
