Akropol, Asklepion

In the Acropolis, above the modern town, are the remains of The Temple of Trajan; The Temple of Athena; The famous Pergamons Library of 200,000 volumes!; Altar of Zeus which is said to be the place where Satan has his throne (Revelation 2:13); a steep and impressive theatre, the Sanctuary of Demeter, a gymnasium laid out on three terraces and the Agora. Then visit The Asclepion – was perhaps the worlds most famous ancient medical center, and the second most important site in Bergama, located to the southwest of the lower city was a sanctuary dedicated to the god of health: Asclepios. Red Courtyard or Red Basilica was built for worship of the Egyptian gods Serapis, Isis and Harpocrates when Egyptian religion was reaching into the Roman Empire. Later on the Byzantines preserved the sacred place, building the Church of St. John the Apostle. The building is still sacred in our days as there is a mosque now in one of its towers.Some free time for shopping. Drive back to Port.
