Driving up in the mountain, we reach the Shrine of Virgin Mary, the place where she is believed to have spent her last years. It is recorded that St. John brought Virgin Mary to Ephesus after the death of Christ, and that a small house was built for her on Bulbuldagi Mount. The house was officially declared a shrine of the Roman Catholic Church in 1896 and it has been running as an active chapel over a century. The shrine of Virgin Mary it’s a popular place of pilgrimage; as well Paul VI, John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI had visited this sacred place.

Ephesus, one of the most impressive archaeological sites of our times, has been a religious center of the early Christianity in ancient time– Apostol Paul and Apostol John stayed and preached in Ephesus! Ephesus has been also home to Luke, Silas, Timothy, Aquila, and Priscilla. Our days, one can see the extensive ruins including the Odeon, State Agora, The Prytaneion, Domitian Square, Hercules Gate, The Fountain of Trajan, Temple of Hadrian, the Curetes Street, Celsius Library, The Gymnasium, The Grand Theatre-most magnificent structure in Ephesus and the place where Apostle Paul preached to capacity crowds, The Arcadian Way, The Marble Street, where St. Paul walked and held daily discussions (act. 19:9),..and much more monuments remained preserved till our days, constantly reminding us the great history of this ancient city. As we reach the monument, you will learn about its significance and what happened there.

Continue to St. John’s Basilica, constructed by Justinian I in the 6th century. It stands over the believed burial site of John the Apostle. It was modeled after the now lost Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople. Construction of the church began in about 536 and was dedicated on the eve of the feast day of the Princes of the Apostles in 550 and completed in 565. The building of this church was presided over by the bishop, Hypatius of Ephesus. As the leading ecclesiastical theoretician and writer of his day, it was possible that he gained the influence of Justinian and had the tomb of St. John reconstructed, as major construction in the Asia Minor was rare. After its completion, it was regarded as one of the holiest church of its time and was held in great honor.

After the tour, visiting handicraft center and having presentation for authentic Turkish arts and drive back to Kusadasi Port.
